Our Forest Grown Black Cohosh Root is offered in partnership with small producers in rural Appalachia and the Forest Grown Verification Program. This flowering perennial is native to many parts of Canada and the United States, and thrives in forests rich in biodiversity. The roots are best harvested between July and September from plants that have been established for at least three years.
An alarming amount of this root on the market is unsustainably harvested in a way that devestates the stands, leaving no plants to thrive for future generations. Because of this, we are working closely with small forest farmers, who are tending the black cohosh stands, ensuring sustainable harvest methods that include replanting and propagating this at-risk native botanical. While forest grown botanicals come with a higher price, we believe that supporting this project will change the culture throughout Appalachia, transforming it into a stewarded forest crop with sustainability as the guiding force.
WHAT IS THE FOREST GROWN VERIFICATION PROGRAM?
This innovative verification program is the first of its kind that brings woodland botanicals that are typically wild harvested under close observation, with stewardship as the guiding principle. Each forest grown botanical that the program offers is verified prior to harvest each year, to ensure that the stand is healthy and can support selective collection. From there, the plants are carefully harvested, processed, and dried.
Our goal with supporting this program is to forge a new path of producing woodland botanicals for the future, and we are grateful for your support of our long term efforts towards conservation and stewardship.
This herbaceous perennial features showy, white inflorescences that are borne on a terminal branching spike-like raceme. The plant itself grows between three and six feet tall.
